Even her earlier, fairly clichéd behaviour for the character type is given a different perspective after later events and revelations, deepening her as character. The ghost of the school and the character driving the plot, she starts out fairly bland and dull, but as her history is revealed and the cause and effect of her amnesia is discussed, she becomes far more interesting. And when she lets down her guard, through fear or her attraction to Teiichi, we get to see that she isn’t nearly as much of a 2-dimensional character as the rest of the cast.įinally, Yuuko Kanoe. While she doesn’t get a huge amount of backstory or development, I found her to be one of the more interesting characters due to her mostly well thought-out angst, such as how classmates would bully her due sharing the same family name as the ghost. Kirie Kanoe is related to Yuuko (granddaughter of Yuuko’s sister, or something like that), and as such can see her.

This is more or less her entire existence, but at least she prevents the series from getting too dark or serious. The comedy she’s involved in basically boils down to misunderstandings, Yuuko messing with her directly, or getting confused as Yuuko does stuff to Teiichi to make him get awkward and embarrassed in front of her (obviously unaware of Yuuko during all of this). Ditzy and basically oblivious to Yuuko’s presence (to the extent that despite being the most enthusiastic about the supernatural, is the only one of the group who can’t see her), she also has a crush on Niiya because this is just that kind of show. Momoe Okonogi is the consistent comedic foil of the group. The main cast in their natural environment Unfortunately, an epilogue section undoes most of it, which is rather disappointing, but at the same time I came out of smiling so it’s not all bad. Despite its clichéd nature, it’s handled surprisingly well. Amnesia does continue after this, getting a bit melodramatic with a conclusion that was apparent from the start – Yuuko, having no earthly regrets anymore, can’t stay in this mortal plane and so and so forth. Eventually it all comes to a head in a surprisingly emotional climax, wherein the two sides reconcile thanks to Teiichi and become one again. This results in a lot of effective drama and tension as Yuuko isn’t aware of the existence of Shadow Yuuko, so when she’s forced to meet her other half she breaks down and forgets everything all over again. It revolves around Yuuko’s past for the most part, introducing Shadow Yuuko – the half of her with all the painful memories, and who suffers her negative emotions – who Yuuko has disassociated from her own personality, resulting in the two separate entities. I'm familiar with the way anime takes from established light novel series and mangas but this seems an interesting case in that the anime now seems ahead of the manga. The second half is a definite improvement, taking a more serious tone (but never outright getting rid of its sense of humor). I went looking for the manga and found up to date scanlations. Teiichi starts a supernatural investigation club to try and discover the truth about Yuuko's past.

However, she has amnesia and can't remember her previous life or the circumstances of her death. Investigating the old building he runs into a girl with long black hair who he soon realizes is Yuuko. Freshman student Teiichi Niiya starts at Seikyō Academy and soon hears the legend of Yuuko, a girl who 60 years before was left to die and whose ghost now haunts the old school building. I did a search but the series doesn't seem to have a thread of its own here so I thought I would start one.īasically it's a high school ghost story.

I found the anime series on Crunchyroll and have been blown away by it, especially the last few episodes which have been excellent.
